FRESNO, California – After reviewing the miscellaneous charges on her credit card, victim of credit card fraud Amaya Pena created a GoFundMe for the thief because of their pathetic purchases.
“I hadn’t even realized I was being robbed at first because of how low the charges were,” said Pena, scrolling through the type of transactions one would make at rock bottom. “Most of their purchases were under $20 and usually at places like McDonald’s and Exxon. They splurged a little at this burger and wing joint, spent about $45 there, which must have been their idea of fine dining.”
Initially, Pena called her bank to dispute the charges, but while the banker read through the list of unauthorized purchases, she began feeling an overwhelming sense of pity for her criminal.
“They spent $500 at Dollar Tree, and I have to assume at that point they thought they were living their best life,” Pena explained. “But $500 at Dollar Tree? That just ain’t right. That’s when I wondered if maybe they’re homeless, because only someone in truly desperate circumstances would steal a credit card and ball out at the dollar store.”
Despite closing her credit card account, Pena felt guilty about cutting off what appeared to be someone’s lifeline to basic necessities. She launched a GoFundMeto help her credit card thief live with dignity, promising to give the money to whoever could prove they had stolen from her.
At press time, the thief was arrested after reaching out to confess to the act because while their purchases were sad, what they did was a crime.
