DALLAS, Texas – Cooper Flagg really has his work cut out for him if he’s going to follow his mother’s rules. The Dallas Mavericks rookie has promised to abide by the law laid down by his mother, Kelly, or face the consequences, including no home visits for a year. Flagg, a former national high school player of the year and standout at Duke for just a year, was the first overall pick in this year’s NBA Draft and has recently signed a $62 million deal with Mavs. But he made his first big promise to his mom not to spend more than $180,000 on his first fancy car and now she’s insisting on a few other requirements as well.

Seems Kelly Flagg wants to approve of her son’s dates beforehand, via a video chat, and she wants him home home before midnight unless team travel makes it impossible. Speaking of video chats, mom also wants young Cooper to ping her with a photo every time he gets on the team plane, to reassure her that he’s wearing his seat belt. “My son is a nice boy,” Kelly Flagg said. “That’s the way I brought him up. So he won’t be doing any of that trash talking that LeBron and those other NBA stars do. And he’s already promised to run all his Instagram posts by me before he sends them out.”

Sonya Curry, mother of NBA stars Steph and Seth Curry and herself the author of a book on parenting, sympathized with the rules laid down by Cooper Flagg’s mother but reminded her that the temptations of life are all too real, especially to young boys with a lot of money.

For his part, young Cooper Flagg denied all knowledge of a photo that showed an $800,000 Bugatti Chiron with the vanity plate “Mama’s Boy.”
