DEDHAM, Massachusetts – Jurors find Karen Read not guilty of killing her Boston police officer boyfriend. She was accused of having hit her boyfriend while driving back from bars, intoxicated, as described by witnesses on the stand during the 30-day trial. Her lawyers employed a clever defense which alleged that Karen Read was so inebriated that she could not remember whether she hit her boyfriend or not. Since she was not sure of what happened that night, there was an obvious reasonable doubt that precluded the Jury from convicting her.
The judge sentenced Karen Read to rehab classes since it was her first offense for driving above the State alcohol blood limit. Advocates against drunk driving are concerned about the precedent this case creates, and worry that many others on the streets may kill their boyfriends, girlfriends, or spouses, claiming they were too drunk and will not face any consequences. Congressman Rober Write will introduce the Read Law to see if there are any major feelings against drunken drivers using the same legal strategy in the future.
Karen Read in the interview following the verdict, wished the best to O’Keefe’s family. She went off with her lawyers to celebrate the victory at a local bar.
