Washington D.C. – Congress passed a bill late last night that amounts to a constitutional amendment, which will limit the protections of free speech to those speaking negatively against Charlie Kirk. Charlie Kirk was a conservative who spoke in colleges and other venues to debate and spread conservative values, until he was murdered last week by a single rifle gunshot. Following his murder, Congress and other conservative-leaning politicians have been upset about how hostile the rhetoric has been toward their leader figure from those who did not believe in their values. Republicans in Congress justified the law by expressing that such rhetoric amounted to hate speech.
We asked a few Republican members of Congress how they felt about similar speech from those on the right against people on the left. The responses were primarily based on 2 ideas: one that there is no hostile negative rhetoric against people on the left in the same negative tone as that expressed against Charlie Kirk. The second type of response was that Charlie Kirk was a unique figure and a modern American hero who deserves special consideration.
In the law just passed, and to honor Charlie Kirk, the only punishment allowed against someone convicted of hate speech against that figure is the mandatory attendance of 10 Catholic Church masses, kneeling.
