KHUMBU, Nepal – The Nepalese government has closed the Mt Everest South Base Camp indefinitely due to a century of feces buildup in the area. The number of humans visiting the area has increased significantly over time, resulting in overcrowding over the last decade. What was once a pristine environment became a large toilet bowl for the rich to greet and meet before they attempt to climb the famous mountain.

The Nepalese Environmental Protection Agency declared the site a superfund, with over 10,000 tons of feces spread across the area and slowly contaminating the soil and nearby waterways. The Sherpa association has several planned demonstrations in Kathmandu to protest the closure.

The site will remain closed indefinitely, with strict controls in place should it reopen in the future. Travel groups are proposing new locations for the wealthy hikers to meet, such as San Francisco, where feces on the streets are a common occurrence, and local authorities do not condemn.
