DOVER, Delaware – After sixty years of hard work and putting away 10% of his paycheck, local boomer Dan is looking forward to his retirement, confident that he’ll have enough to last him about two years.
“I’m really looking forward to it,” Dan said with a twinkle in his eye. “I’ve spent decades working, and now it’s time to reap the benefits of my retirement savings. I’ll do a little fishing and enjoy what’s left. Cross some items off the bucket list.”
Dan, who has been saving since he was in his mid-20s, is currently 75.
“A lot of kids don’t realize the benefits of saving just a little bit of your paycheck,” Dan said, as he proudly opened an envelope to reveal his retirement account statement showing a total of $20,000. “Without this money, I wouldn’t have been able to retire at all.”
Dan’s savings are enough to support him for about two years, provided he sticks to a strict budget of “mortgage payments, food, and water”. He refused to reveal how much he made per paycheck, wanting to teach young people who are scared about their futures, to focus on the positives. “My salary doesn’t matter. What matters is that I planned it out, and you can too. The average lifespan of American men is 77 years. Retirement is all about numbers.”
When asked what would happen if he were to live past 77, Dan paused for a moment, glanced over at his shotgun leaning against the wall, and said, “I’ve got a plan for that when the time comes”. Since the interview, Dan had crossed out retirement from his bucket list before throwing the rest into the trash.
